about

During the summer of 1985, I was on holiday in England for several weeks. During that time, Mark, Jan and Aaron continued to write and demo new song ideas for me to add my parts onto when I got back. One of these was The Loop, which made the list when Sticks And Stones was assembled five years later. Another tune was Problem Girl, which has remained one of my personal favorites to this day. Mark wrote it about a mutual friend of ours who simply could not get it together. Cast in the mold of two of our favorite bands at the time—Aztec Camera and The Smiths—it is entirely possible that the tune was rejected for fear of it being too derivative of those particular bands (funny how that never seemed to stop us before!) Regardless, the biting sardonic lyrics coupled with a jangly guitar and cheesy keyboard only served to somehow underscore the song’s fairly serious underlining theme. Unfortunately, the song only got as far as this rough mix featuring a surprisingly good scratch vocal by Mark. Despite the typical first take errors and frivolity, Mark carried it off with his usual aplomb and nailed the lyric’s point so perfectly that I had to hide the tape away for fear of our mutual friend ever finding it!

lyrics

She just can't cope with performance anxiety
A figment of an imaginative society
She's a tramp enamored by extravagance
She will jump at the beat of a new romance

What you gonna do with that problem girl
What you gonna say when it starts to grow
Is it mental, physical, moral or spiritual
What you gonna say when it starts to show

She regrets what she does
But she knows that she can't change time
She wants to go to heaven when she dies
A victim of merciless self-scrutiny
The captain and the sailor trapped in a mutiny

What you gonna do with that problem girl
What you gonna say when it starts to grow
Is it mental, physical, moral or spiritual
What you gonna say when it starts to show

Tell them that it's genius trapped by a mediocre imagination
Tell that that it's guilt trying to break out of innocence
It's a grand ruse baby that can't be save by a sense of humor
It's a lot of time put in and no worthwhile experience

What you gonna do with that problem girl
What you gonna say when it starts to grow
Is it mental, physical, moral or spiritual
What you gonna say when it starts to show
