about

“Cut us a hit, Bongo!!” These were the words that prompted this glimmering, hook-laden clash/bang of a track that we built not from the ground up but rather backwards, then forwards, then sideways! A bit of backtracking is in order — percussionist extraordinaire Bongo Bob Smith (everyone’s favorite ‘fairy duster’ on nearly all Exit releases since Charlie Peacock’s Lie Down in the Grass) had just come off of a long hiatus as Narada Michael Walden’s big hit record drum programmer for Top 40 artists like Whitney Houston and others. Knowing a good schmooze when we smelled one (and by this time desperate for a hit single that would catapult us to teenage stardom), we pleaded with Bob to ‘share some of the gold’, as it were, and build us a track destined for platinum heaven.

Well, he did a good job. So good, in fact, that we panicked when we realized that nobody would believe it was really us (which it wasn’t, actually, save my voice and guitar) when they heard it. So, bound and determined (but more bound than anything), we chose to go back to square one by painstakingly replacing all of Bob’s sampled instruments with real ones. Soon discouraged by the prospect of trying to reheat a soufflé, we got about as far as the rhythm section and quit. A rough mix was made, and the song was subsequently forgotten.

Ah, ambition...

lyrics

Come on let me in
I swear I'll be your only friend
And I will get down on my knees for you
And if I could
You know I would do anything at all
To get you near today
Hear me say

You're more than money
More than glory
More than I could ever hope to say
You're more than beauty
More than mystery
More than now
More than yesterday

Take me to your heart
'Cuz there is where we make it start
And I will get down on my knees for you
And pay the price
Sacrifice
Do anything at all to melt your soul on ice
Realize

You're more than money
More than glory
More than I could ever hope to say
You're more than beauty
More than mystery
More than now
More than yesterday

More than a lover
More than a friend
More than a talent
More than a trend
More than a mystery
More than a dance
More than your history
More than romance
More than your politics
More than your plans
More than a sure thing
More than a chance
More than your weakness
More than your strength
More than completeness
More than fragments
