Believe it or not, this is a first-time rehearsal which was unwittingly recorded by Steve Griffith. Listen for me directing the band through the changes — they really didn’t know what they were playing!
For reference, we would occasionally record our rehearsals while working on a new song so that the writer could go back and re-work the number on tape without having to put the group through the endless experimentation. This rehearsal of Pearls was only meant to be preparatory — a rough canvas upon which I could later paint. We had no idea that it was being recorded. When we walked back into the control room to say hello to Steve (whom I thought was merely setting levels for a future recording) and heard this wild, unrestrained sound coming out of the monitors, I became agitated and started jumping up and down, declaring that this recording must be released now! The guys thought I was insane ... and we’ve been trying to duplicate this rehearsal note for note in concert ever since.
