about

CROSS THE CITY SKY (demo) / WALK THROUGH THE DOOR (demo)

These two recordings go even further back in our history to the ‘Ping Pong’ era with Mark Proctor on drums. I recalled us performing Cross The City Sky over 30 years ago but had no idea that we had ever recorded it. Walk Through The Door was so obscure that I had forgotten about it completely. Imagine my amazement when Jan Eric unearthed these two live demos from the early 80’s which would have most certainly ended up on Sticks And Stones had it been issued a few years earlier. These tunes are typical of Mark Tootle’s early writing when he helped front the band and shared lead vocal duties with me. He would eventually branch out musically and blossom lyrically to become one of best pop songwriters I have ever had the pleasure to work with.

lyrics

Wheels of progress turn
Spokes of passion burning
Engines winding out
Brakes are all but failing
Dragging each other on motorized need

I count this life of mine
A worn out, old disguise
A pale sienna sunset across a city sky

Searching with electrified fingertips
For that television living
Change a channel
Change your wife
Trying to put color into black and white

I count this life of mine
A worn out, old disguise
A pale sienna sunset across a city sky

Eye unsatisfied with seeing
Ear unsatisfied with hearing
Hand unsatisfied with holding
Mind unsatisfied with knowing
Danger: radiation
Egotistical fallout
Explosions out of atoms
Living out of dreams
In the end the elements are nothing that we need

I count this life of mine
A worn out, old disguise
A pale sienna sunset across a city sky
